[IN]SIDE Talks: Episode 04

Filmmaker Aradhana Seth in conversation with Architect Sanjay Wadhwa

Aradhana Seth in conversation with Delhi-based Architect Sanjay Wadhwa, whose passion to create sustainable spaces that nurture the health and well being of those who use them, has made him one of the most popular Architects in India. Together they discuss how to properly research, comprehend and communicate design, hoping future generations keep the spirit of the profession alive.

[03:40]

Both for my professional and personal life, joining the School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi, was one of the best things that could have happened to me. My two biggest influences were Charles Correa and Joseph Allen Stein – both had a very different style and approach to Architecture, but both styles were so amazing. Even after 30 years of practice, I still feel their influences in my own work.

[09:45]

One of out key strategies employed in most of our designing is the aspect of blurring the boundary between our outdoor and indoor spaces. Creating thresholds between these spaces to enable seamless transitions into nature.

[13:00]

Designs today are necessities, not just wishes and desires. Design is a center piece in the modern age. In my time, Architects were a luxury only the rich could afford.

[14:30]

Sustainability is essential. Design decisions on materials should be based on the wellness of the users of the space, as well as the wellness of the planet. And of course, design needs to be relevant to its context.

[16:50]

Glass and steel have become the “vernacular” forms and materials in Dubai.

[17:10]

Sustainability is inherent to all architects and designers who feel for planet Earth.

[27:10]

Architecture is at the crossroads of art and technology.

[29:00]

Glass has undergone tremendous innovation. These innovations have ensured that even when these materials are used in hot and dry climates, it is able to maintain sustainability, which was not the norm until recently. It allows light to enter, but not heat.

[30:30]

Materials are technology driven.
