Radiation Shielding Tiles

Innovations by H & R Johnson (India)

Developed Under Technology License Agreement with CSIR – AMPRI (Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute), Bhopal and H & R Johnson (India), the Radiation Shielding Tile (RST) is the newest innovation that helps to reduce the transmission of X-Rays and radiation in hospitals and medical centres, through the use of radiation shielding materials and a special tile laying system.

Discovered almost a 100 years ago, X-Rays continue to play an important role in patient care – enabling scientists and medical professionals to look inside the body of a patient and diagnose a variety of ailments. Today, such technology is used in numerous hospital branches, like Radiotherapy, Interventional Radiology, Computed Tomography, Mammography, Bone Mineral Densitometers and Dental Radiography.

However, over prolonged exposures and leakages, X-Rays prove to be harmful to doctors and patients alike, leading health risks and radiation hazards. According to the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), appropriate structural shielding is a must for all walls, doors and floors of any room housing X-Ray equipment, so that members is the medical staff and the general public are kept to minimal exposure limits and will not exceed the prescribed dosage limit. Long exposures have been reported to cause anaemia, brain and kidney damage, and erosion of human cellular strength in the skin and muscles of the body.

Currently, lead, brick, concrete and steel are used as shielding materials – as recommended by the AERB – but the materials require constant maintenance, and their effectiveness wanes over time. Lead has also been cited by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to be a cancer-causing material, that is dangerous to human beings.

Using patented technology, H & R Johnson (India) have created a tile which serves as a solution to all these issues. The Johnson Endura X-Ray and Radiation Shielding Tiles (RST) has been created by using high density radiation shielding materials like Feldspar and Zirconium Silicate instead of lead, and a unique tiling overlap system which prevents radiation leakage completely.

H & R Johnson (India) have managed to create an affordable and lead-free solution to radiation hazards in the medical industry, which is also easy to install and certified by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, protecting the lives of the general public, and also the many medical professionals who put their lives in harm’s way in order to protect our fellow citizens.

A series of bi-annual journals published by Matter in collaboration with H & R Johnson (India) on Contemporary Architecture and Design in India. The books chronicle and document ideas and work of some of the most innovative designers from India. The 200-page journal is a compilation of drawings, essays, dialogues and editorial on projects of many scales and typologies.
