Modern Ceramic Tiles: A Handbook for Professionals

A Book by Dinesh Vyas

“Modern Ceramic Tiles: A Handbook for Professionals” is the first book of its kind to provide a consolidated overview of ceramic tiles – from the process of procurement, to its installation and performance efficiencies, as well as their characteristics and limitations. Authored by Dinesh Vyas [Head of Marketing, H & R Johnson (India)], the book serves as a guide to any consumer who desires an in depth understanding of the world of ceramic tiles.

India is the second largest producer of commercial ceramic tiles in the world, with a large part of its population serving as consumers as well. The inaccessibility to relevant information of ceramic tiles is aided by the biases of tile suppliers and retailers, which creates an information gap that cannot be adequately bridged by the general citizens. Invariably, when there are defects or deformities that occur while the tiles are being handled or laid – and in some cases even after the spaces are adopted by its users – it is difficult to understand what caused these issues to materialize, and how to properly rectify them. It was this realisation that prompted Mr. Vyas to begin consolidating his accumulated knowledge of ceramic tiles, in order to structure it into an organised guide which would allow the common individual access to it.

Although navigating this information effectively requires a specific technical knowledge, the guide is organised in a digestible format, enabling it to be understood by even those who have no prior background in the field of construction. The book is broken up into 12 main chapters, which cover the types of tiles and their characteristics, the technical standards and general specifications, and the various systems which are involved in choosing and deploying suitable tiles for different contexts.

My main objective with this book was to improve the quality of ceramic tile workmanship in India, allowing anybody who is interested access to this vital information.
