In 2022, Randhir Singh was commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York to produce an expansive portfolio of photographs on modern architecture in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, providing a contemporary perspective on modern architecture at a time of significant and progressive societal transformation. The works were exhibited as part of the series, The Project of Independence: Architectures of Decolonization in South Asia, 1947 – 1985.
The full portfolio of photographs was included in a scholarly catalogue accompanying the exhibition.
This project presented me with an amazing opportunity to spend time in and photograph a collection of buildings that have been critical to the development of modernism across the sub-continent. Through these photographs, I have tried to express my joy and excitement at visiting these buildings while providing a fresh perspective on the architecture.
