Filmmaker Aradhana Seth in conversation with Architect Swapnil Patil

Aradhana Seth in conversation with Architect and Urban Designer Swapnil Patil, currently based in Pune, as they discuss everyday architecture, the relationship between architects and design educators, and a new model of growth for the design and construction industry. Over 20 years, he has worked on a range of projects which led to his firm, Swapnil Patil and Partners (SPAP) being awarded the Top Master Planning and Architecture Firm of the year, amongst numerous other national and international accolades.

My first memory of architecture is coming across an architectural blueprint when I was seven or eight years old, and somehow that memory has stayed with me.

Spaces have a profound memory. I remember all the spaces from my boarding school, it was a very well-designed building. Somehow, these things stay with you, and it pushed me on my architectural journey.

When we design institution buildings, we try to make every corner of the building a space which stimulates learning.

I believe that architecture should leave a feeling of elation to anybody who experiences the space.

I studied Architecture in Kohlapur, but my course was quite a run-of-the-mill course. Only when I visited Ahmedabad for my internship, I was awaked to architecture and art which was ahead of the curve. Then I worked wit Architect BV Doshi for 3 – 4 years, and this was a huge moment for me.

The biggest challenge in architecture is dealing with limited resources to try to capture the aspirations of the client.

If you learn to build efficiently, you will be able to build sustainably with a lot more ease.

We see evidence of tiles being used in ancient Mesopotamian and Ottoman Empires.

The books chronicle and document ideas and work of some of the most innovative designers from India. The 200-page journal is a compilation of drawings, essays, dialogues and editorial on projects of many scales and typologies.
